Learn More about Karlsruhe and What It Offers for Expats

Lying at an altitude of between 100m and 320m, Karlsruhe's central point is marked by the palace tower, with 32 streets spanning out from it, hence its nickname of "fan city" or Fächerstadt. Founded in 1715, the city is steeped in history and features many ancient landmarks, such as the Evangelische Stadtkirche (Lutheran church), with the tomb of the city's founder, Margrave Charles III William, lying within. Boasting a buoyant economy, Karlsruhe is further home to Germany's largest oil refinery, one of the largest electricity utility companies (Energie Baden-Württemberg), and a host of high-tech industries. There is an excellent public transport network and modern shopping malls at Kaiserstraße, Karlstraße and Waldstraße.
