InterNations Rome Is Growing and Fast!

Lorenzo Panunzio - InterNations Ambassador, Rome

When Lorenzo Panunzio started as an Ambassador in 2013 he had ambitious goals to grow the InterNations Rome Community by improving the quality of the events. Two years on and Rome is now one of the fastest growing InterNations Communities worldwide.

After starting with 7,000 members, it only took us one and a half years to reach 15,000! Where we started with 150 people at our events, we now host events with over 300 people — it really is a huge change.

While working as the Head of Events Management for some of London’s most exclusive nightclubs, Lorenzo was approached by the InterNations London Ambassador to host an event at one of his venues. After returning to Rome some years later, he approached the InterNations Rome Ambassador with an offer to host an event at the restaurant where he was Director.

“I really liked the concept and after InterNations had surfaced twice in my life I thought to myself — I should get involved in this. I heard one of the Ambassadors was leaving and I applied to take on the role,” says Lorenzo.

When Lorenzo joined, he knew with his background in marketing and events management that he had a great opportunity to improve the quality of the events and grow the community. His background coupled with an extensive network in Rome and passion for bringing people together made Lorenzo a perfect candidate.

“When I started as an Ambassador I remember saying to Sandra (InterNations Team Member) that I felt we could double our membership base in Rome within two years. After starting with 7,000 members, it only took us one and a half years to reach 15,000! Where we started with 150 people at our events, we now host events with over 300 people — it really is a huge change,” he says.

Lorenzo attributes the growth in his community to the quality of the venues he has managed to secure for the Rome events. Lorenzo recalls negotiating with Radisson Blu for eight months before they agreed to host an InterNations Event. InterNations Rome has now hosted their fourth event in this stunning venue and Lorenzo is planning many more.

“The InterNations crowd is of such a high quality that hosting an InterNations Event is a really great marketing opportunity for some venues. If you can really help venues understand the opportunity they are presented with from a marketing perspective, you can more easily secure great venues for your InterNations Events.”

Along with Rome Ambassador Laura, Lorenzo is excited about continuing to develop the InterNations Community and connecting with expatriates at their events in Rome.

For new Ambassadors, Lorenzo’s advice is:

  • Don’t give up when you see a difficulty. If a venue says no to you or you hear critical feedback, keep trying. These kinds of problems are successes waiting to be achieved.

  • Strive to offer something unique at your events. Something people think they might never experience. Think about what your city has to offer that is special, especially for expatriates, and start from there.

  • You need to be a social person and passionate about bringing people together. Only take on the role if you can commit to it. It’s a great opportunity, but it is a serious responsibility that needs to be honored.
