Brisbane Expatriates: You're in Good Hands!

Zina Toth - InterNations Ambassador, Brisbane

From the moment a member of the InterNations Brisbane Community accepts an invitation to attend one of her events, Ambassador Zina Toth starts to craft a memorable InterNations experience they won't forget.

When people come to our events in Brisbane, I really want them to love it! I want to make people feel as though they are coming into my home to be with friends. Creating a welcoming environment for them is really important to me.

Zina joined InterNations in 2012 at the recommendation of a friend and quickly became a Group Consul for the InterNations Brisbane Explorers Group. Having lived in Australia for over 20 years and worked as a tour guide, her deep knowledge of the city and connection to social and cultural events made her a perfect fit for the role of Group Consul.

Hosting activities as a Group Consul enabled Zina to get to know members of the InterNations Brisbane Community on a more personal level. When the opportunity came up to become an Ambassador, it was a group of members who approached Zina to take on the role.

As a natural event host with past experience organizing some of Brisbane's largest cultural events, the Ambassador role enables her to continue doing what she loves. She is passionate about creating a welcoming atmosphere at her events and it shows.

“When people come to our events in Brisbane, I really want them to love it! I want to make people feel as though they are coming into my home to be with friends. Creating a welcoming environment for them is really important to me.”

“For me, the role of the event host starts from the moment I send out my invitations. As people sign up for the event, I make sure I look at their profile to learn a little about them, their cultural background, their social interests and career. This is really important as it means when I greet them at the event I already know a bit about them and who I could connect them with. People are often shocked when I greet them by name for the first time and offer to introduce them to others who they may be interested in meeting.”

Zina says working as part of a strong Ambassador team is key to hosting a successful event. By sharing responsibilities at the event between herself and her Co-Ambassador, Sasha Alexander, she is able to ensure the event runs smoothly and the InterNations guests are having a great time.

“I like to help people. I like to help them understand that even though Brisbane can feel like a big city at times, they’re definitely not alone here.”

For new Ambassadors, Zina’s advice is:

  • Keep your eyes open for new venues and don’t be afraid to negotiate. As an Ambassador, you have a lot to offer a new venue looking to raise their profile. Bringing your members in large numbers on a night that suits them can be really attractive to some new venues.

  • Make sure you arrive at the venue early and explain the flow of the event to the venue manager and staff. It’s important they understand what InterNations is so they can give guests the right information when asked.

  • Make sure you plan ahead. The further in advance you can plan your events, the easier it will be to manage.
