A Little Piece of Europe in a Tropical Climate

Founded by the Dutch in the 18th century, Georgetown has a diverse heritage of Dutch, French and English influences which is obvious in the mixture of architecture (the beautiful Parliament Building and St George's Anglican Church are two must-see sites), street names and languages. For a capital city, it has a relatively low population, around a quarter of a million people, of which expats make up a small number. The cultural diversity, however, makes for an interesting world of influences. The local culture is relaxed and relatively insular — Guyana is often overlooked by even its fellow South Americans — which means you could see all walks of life, from the country's president to the street seller, mixing happily and freely. You'll find a thriving nightlife with jazz clubs and superb local food, too — try the roti, boulanger choka, flat bread and aubergine dip (you'll notice a definite Indian influence on local cuisine). There are many parks and green areas for you and your family to enjoy, as well as the beautiful Botanical Gardens. The city has good transport links as well as being laid out in a simple grid formation which makes traveling on foot easy.

InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world. Meet fellow global minds in your city of residence or get to know local expatriates before you're moving or traveling abroad and never feel like a stranger. InterNations makes it easy for you to stay in touch with your expat friends, both online and offline, so you can grow your network of friends and contacts from all over the world. Whether they live in Vienna or Moscow, InterNations allows you to be close to them even if they are miles away.
