Start Your New Life in the Dominican Republic
To work in the Dominican Republic you'll need a good understanding of Spanish, and due to the nature of work permits, it's advisable to obtain employment before relocating. Expats often head for the capital, Santo Domingo, where several international companies have offices, and the Cyberpark area of the city provides opportunities for foreigners in technology or high-tech manufacturing. Traditionally, exporting has long been the main industry and tourism is a major employer, but teaching English is also a good option for expatriates. The traditional diet favors meat and starchy foods and benefits from Spanish, African, and Middle-Eastern influences as well as the indigenous Taino. Desserts make use of a range of ingredients, from fresh fruit to coconut and cakes such as arepa, made from cornmeal. The two largest shopping malls in the Dominican Republic are Blue Mall and Agora Mall, both located in Santa Domingo, and busy nightlife can be found in any of the coastal tourist hotspots. National festivals throughout the year include the parades and street parties of Carnival and Restoration Day, and each city hosts unique festivals, such as the lively Meringue festival in Puerto Plata.
