What’s Cluj Like for Expats?
Cluj-Napoca (often shortened to just Cluj) is located in the Northeast of Romania and is the historical capital of Transylvania. With a population of around 300,000 people, this city is on the rise and is turning into an economic powerhouse for Romania. Several multinational companies are located within the city, including Nokia, Aegon, and Bosch, who have just built a large factory just outside the city. Cluj is also an important center for education—it’s home to the Babeș-Bolyai University, which is the biggest in Romania and dates back to 1581. The official language of Romania is of course Romanian, which is one of the only Romance languages in Eastern Europe (Romance meaning it comes from Latin). This makes it slightly easier to learn for speakers of most Western European languages, although there will of course still be differences to what you’re used to. Cluj has quite a mild climate, the winters rarely get below minus five Celsius and the summers stay around the twenty-degree mark.
