A Booming Job Market in Calgary

Calgary's economy has long centered on the oil industry and associated occupations at some of the country's biggest oil producers. Targets in place for new job openings paired with low tax rates and no payroll tax mean a variety of career options for expats. Particular jobs to look for include IT, accountancy, retail, contractors, and architects, with a particular need for educators and healthcare professionals. The city also aims to compete with more "cultured" rivals Toronto and Vancouver by investing heavily into media and the arts. Add to these advantages the highest average income in Canada, and the job market looks promising. Just 80 km from the Rocky Mountains, Calgary provides active expats with a range of outdoor activities, including skiing and snowboarding at nearby Banff, with fishing, mountain biking, golf, and hiking also popular. Back in the city, museums, zoos, shopping malls, a thriving theater scene, and numerous festivals ensure that your life in Calgary will never be dull. If you worry about the cold winters, you'll be happy to find the +15 heated walkways (so named because they are elevated 15 feet above street level) that link nearly every building in the downtown area for year-round inner city leisure.

InterNations is the largest global network for expatriates, with communities in 420 cities around the world. Meet fellow global minds in your city of residence or get to know local expatriates before you're moving or traveling abroad and never feel like a stranger. InterNations makes it easy for you to stay in touch with your expat friends, both online and offline, so you can grow your network of friends and contacts from all over the world. Whether they live in Singapore or Riyadh, InterNations allows you to be close to them even if they are miles away.

Make New Friends at InterNations Events

Starting life in a new city can be difficult if you don't also make new friends, which is why we host regular social events to encourage our expats to network and socialize together. Also make sure you look at our groups to find like-minded expats with interests in salsa, squash, golf, and dining; you'll soon discover you are part of a friendly community both online and offline with InterNations.
