Casey: Oman Coast

In our InterNations Recommended Blog section we let you take the spotlight! Expat life in general is, of course, a perfect breeding ground for great, user-generated reads, and life in Oman makes no exception. Take your time and browse the great blogs showcased in this article!

Please tell us a little bit about yourself. Who you are, where you come from, when you moved to Oman, etc.

I came to Oman in 2008. I moved around a lot when younger.

When and why did you decide to start blogging about your experiences?

I started blogging in 2011 when had more free time.

Do you have any favorite blog entries of yours?

Sometimes, I write about things I would have liked to have known before I arrived.

Tell us about the ways your new life in Oman differs from that back home. Did you have trouble getting used to the new circumstances? Did you experience culture shock?

Oman is a nice country and easy to adapt to. The landscape is majestic. In general, the Omani people go out of their way to be helpful. The summer weather (with temperatures between 45-50°C) was the biggest change. There are some major cultural difference between the West and Oman; however, it’s been interesting learning about them.

Do you think you were fully prepared for what awaited you in Oman? If you could, would you change some decisions/preparations you made?

I am not sure if anyone can ever be ‘fully’ prepared for what awaits them in life; but keeping an open mind and being flexible goes a long way.

Every expat knows that expat life comes with some hilarious anecdotes and funny experiences. Care to share one with us?

Sometimes, language mix-ups create unintended results. For example, Arabic does not have the ‘p’ or ‘z’ sound so use ‘b’ and ‘f’ instead with certain words.

Which three tips would you like to give future expats before they embark on their new life in Oman?

  • Not to sweat (literally) the small things such as different level of expectations between cultures.
  • Bring high quality terrain shoes and books (hard to find if you enjoy reading).
  • Enjoy your time and new experiences.

How is the expat community in Oman? Did you have a hard time finding like-minded people or fellow expats?

The expat community is diverse. It is not difficult to meet people that share common interests.
